1. How does the League work?

Teams of 6 players each across the rating spectrum compete against other teams each week in an 8 round Swiss style tournament. Players are sorted into boards based on their rating and play against similarly rated opponents. The games are scheduled each round by the players so that you can play your games on a day and time that suits you the most. Alternate players are arranged should some players drop out of the league for whatever reason.

Pairings will be released at the beginning of each round. Each round runs from Monday 12:00 UTC to Monday the following week at 12:00 UTC.

All league communication occurs on Slack.

But most importantly of all, the league is a hell of a lot of fun! The comradery that you build with your team mates as the rounds progress is amazing, There really isn't anything quite like cheering on your team-mate as he plays the deciding match of the round, only to stare in horror at your screen as he plays a dubious Rook sac. It's also a great excuse to play some longer time control games and improve your chess. So don't be afraid to sign up, I can assure you it's definitely going to be worth it - @Mrlegilimens

2. What are the rules? (Scheduling games and game play policy)

Rules Summary:

♔All games must be 45+45, rated and played on Lichess.org
♛Post your agreed upon match time in #team-scheduling to confirm you scheduled time

♕After pairings are released, each player should attempt to contact their opponent as soon as possible via Slack and/or Lichess
♛Each player must make an initial offer to their opponent, consisting of a minimum of at least 3 distinct times on at least 2 separate days.
♜If you have not heard from your opponent after 48 hours, make your team captain aware
♝Team captains will attempt to find an alternate for the week, and will keep you advised of the status of the match by updating chesster on your availability
♞In some cases a draw may be declared if neither player can find an agreed upon time to play, and an alternate is not available - again involve your captain early

♖If a player does not show up at the scheduled match time, they will have a grace period of 20 minutes to appear, otherwise they will forfeit the game
♛If this situation occurs, contact a mod with timestamped screenshots
♜Any player who misses 2 games in the season will be permanently replaced

♗Claim Victory and Claim Draw Lichess features are not permitted, if your opponent disconects you must wait for their clock to run out

♘ Take-Back requests are not required to be accepted, take your time and ultilize the Confirm your Move feature if needed

Cheating is not tolerated - if you are concerned that someone is cheating, alert your captain

3. Who are the moderators?

Moderators: You can summon a mod by typing "@chesster summon team mods" in Slack. Do NOT contact them directly to tell them the problem you are facing. Summon them in #general and wait for a mod to contact you.

  • Operative mods who handles all league issues: @Seb32, @MrLegilimens, @prune2000, @tnan123, @somethingpretentious, @yago666
  • Active mods that don't do mod work on day to day basis: @petruchio, @endrawes0, @chessicstudent
  • Inactive and former mods: @parrotz, @mkoga, @theino, @angborxley

4. How do I become eligibile to participate?

If you are interested in joining lichess4545 fill out a registration form. There are 3 things to be eligible to participate in Lichess4545 and be placed on a team or as an alternate.

  1. Join our Slack (you'll be invited when you register)
  2. 20 Rated Classical Games on Lichess (non-provisional rating)
  3. Good standing with lichess/lichess4545 (No cheats and no trolls please)

5. How do I get on a team? How do I create my own team?

The 6 player teams are created by the moderators at the start of each season. You do not need to register with a team.

If you are interested in playing with your friends on the same team please indicate your preferences on your registration. It is unlikely that if you request teammates who are similarly rated that you all will end up on the same team.

The moderators try their best to accomodate friend requests but rating balance is taken seriously. Each player on a team should be rated similarly to the other players on the same board on which they play. This changes slightly each season with the changing player pool.

6. Why am I an alternate?

Players who register earlier are given priority for placement on teams when they are formed at the beginning of each season. Those who register later will start as an alternate player and listed in the alternate queue by the order they register.

8. I want to learn more about the other leagues and opportunities to play chess at Lichess4545

You are in luck! There are 4 leagues currently run at Lichess4545. In addition to the team 4545 league there is also Lonewolf, ladder, and blitz-battle. All these leagues have the same eligibility requirement (primarily you need to be a member of the 4545 slack group).

Lonewolf - An 11 round individual Swiss System Tournament with a 30+30 time control. Born out of a desire to play more chess for participants in the Lichess 45+45 league it is now a standalone tournament. See the Lonewolf section of the website at https://www.lichess4545.com/lonewolf/

Mods are @cyanfish, @JPTriton and @yago666

Ladder - Looking to keep playing competitive chess over the break, but in a league with less structure? @chessicstudent, along with @cactus and @seb32 have started a chess ladder system in which all players are ranked and battle their way to the top. Each player can challenge someone higher up on the ladder and if they win, the challenger moves up and the defender down.

For more information, visit #ladder on slack and feel free DM one of the mods (@chessicstudent, @cactus, @seb32) for further questions.

Blitz-Battle - 3+2 tournament only for members of the lichess4545 community. Envisioned to be similar to Titled Tuesday on chess.com. 8 round Swiss tournament where all games need to be completed prior to the start of the next round. Typically played on the weekend and lasts about 2 hours.

For more information join the #blitz-battle on slack. Mods are @lakinwecker, @seb32, @iebrian, @cyanfish and @tnan123
