State of the 4545 League

by @kostasvl

Recently, the 18th season of the 4545 league ended. A big thanks to everyone who participated in the season and especially to our beloved moderators who do a great job, so that we (and they first of all in their luxurious yacht) can enjoy the season! Congratulations to "Embrace the Pain" team who won the season with 12 match points and 39.5 game points. Note that this season, top 4 teams were tied in match points and the winners were decided on game points. "Tal, Dark and Handsome" granted the 2nd place with 39 game points (only half point between the winning team) and "The girl with the hyper-accelerated dragon tattoo" which I wish they had a shorter name (but it's ok because I literally copy-pasted their name to also avoid minor mistakes in team name) took the 3rd place with 38 game points. Click the following link to watch full summary of the 18th season: https://www.lichess4545.com/team4545/season/18/summary/

Remember you can still nominate games for end of season review https://www.lichess4545.com/team4545/season/18/nominate/.

Below you can read the survey write up of this season (by @somethingpretentious):

It’s time to finally share the survey results (now that they have been properly *cough* corrected). You can’t rush corruption after all! Thanks to all respondents - 88 people in all including 14 alternate players! A note on that while we’re here: captains please remember to invite alts to your team channels - alts are people too!

We’re pleased to note that people are still enjoying the league, with 74% 5/5 and 20% ⅘. We also scored highly on organization (82% 5/5) and compare favourably to last season, supposedly improving every single season! Perhaps people themselves enjoy their second season more than their first. Either way 60% 5/5 there as well.

What’s that? Which team had the best name? We thought you might be interested in that - the real competition after all. Well, without further ado, the top 3 team names were:

  1. Harry Pawner and the Groblet of Finegold: Blunderdore’s Return (19.3%)

  2. Don’t Judge a Rook by its Cover (10.8%)

  3. The Girl with the Hyper-Accelerated Dragon Tattoo (9.6%)

The vote on assigning players to teams based on red/yellow cards had some interesting debate. It’s currently unlikely to be implemented for the upcoming season due to laziness and/or time constraints but here’s what the votes were:

Forms response chart. Question title: In what order should we place players on teams? i.e. how should we decide who will be an alternate, other than people who chose to be alternates. Active alternates from the previous season will still have overall priority.. Number of responses: 80 responses.

Another hotly debated topic was the possibility of requiring players to identify. As has been stated several times in #general, this isn’t something we are currently considering implementing but wanted to judge opinion on the issue as it has been suggested. 57% of players voted no with 31% of players voting in favour.

Everyone seems happy with team and league size as usual, but we are always happy to be growing. Speaking of which, although 74% of people think 8 weeks is about right for the season length, 23% of people wanted it to be longer. The vast majority does not want to see the league split (84%) and if it were to be split, time zone is still the preferential method (46%).

Now for the reason you’re all reading this: when is the next season starting!!?!? Well, dear readers, we will be opening registration on Monday 14th October, with two full weeks of registration, team release on the 28th October and the first round starting 4th November. The registration period will be over the FOURTH 45|45 Anniversary tournament (join here https://lichess.org/tournament/Vv1WL7lS) on the 19th October at 1700UTC (don’t worry if you can’t make the start, it will run for 6 hours!).

A few miscellaneous responses to comments to wrap things up:

  • Mods can only enforce rules if we know about them, let your captain and us know if your opponent is causing difficulties in scheduling.

  • Feel free to feed back to any of the mods directly/indirectly/anonymously any of your thoughts.

  • For requested changes to the website please leave an issue on https://github.com/cyanfish/heltour but please check to see it’s not already there!

  • Remember to request your desired teammates during registration - we do our best to match you with as many of these players as we can (provided you aren’t too close in rating).

Finally, we’re glad so many of you are planning to play next season and that glbert and sgis have not driven you away. Congratulations to sgis who drove 7 players away this season compared to glbert’s 6. Hope to see the rest of you next season!

As you can see, no side league news :( Sorry! Please post news items in #lichessledger to have them appear here - I am shamefully ignorant.
