Registrations for the 4th season of Blindfold are open! It's a 7-round swiss league where players can't see the pieces on the board. To register fill out the following form: https://forms.gle/cPzCKA3wjcNoXcC77 If you're facing problems registering for it inform the moderators in the #blindfold channel. Season starts on Monday the 21st of October.

The 4th fantasy league had 26 participants and a nail biting finish similar to 4545 team league with the winner not decided until the last round and only by a 0.5pt margin. In fact there were 6 players within 1.5pts of the winner. Congrats to the winners: 1st place: @Tactix47 (first time winner) 2nd place: @somethingpretentious (special mention for picking players that didn't miss a single game with all 64 games played!) 3rd place: @kraaft (special mention for scoring 32 points - just 1 point behind the winner - but with only 51 games games played - the least # of games played amongst all fantasy teams!) Also, anyone who scored 29 and above should be proud of their performance as they beat the Highest Cost Team and anyone scoring below 25 should be .... never mind - it still takes talent to score below the Lowest Cost Team!! Keep an eye out for the next fantasy league season as soon as the 4545 teams are published for season 19. Picks will be due before R1 pairings are published!

During the off-season don't forget to use #classical-group to find people and play some games!

  1. Be the best a one thing or be good at many things?
    1. Neither one will ever happen – I’m not even capable of imagining impossible things.

Chess questions….

  1. How long have you played chess?
    1. I opened a chess.com account in 2013 and lichess in 2014 with a rating of 700  - so that would be around 6 years on and off. Never really played before that.

  1. Favorite chess player and why?
    1. I really like Svidler when he’s doing commentary with Jan

  1. Favorite chess piece and why?
    1. Knights. They are still a complete mystery to me.

  1. Favorite chess set and why?
    1. I have a set from the 2014 WC match – I like the pieces a lot. Also the Bauhaus set is pretty neat

  1. Yes or no, is chess a sport to you?
    1. Pretty much the only one

  1. If you got 10 hours of free training from any chess master alive today, who’d you pick and why?
    1. Lefong. Gotta improve my bullet trickery game

  1. Do you have a structure of chess training? How many hours do you devote to chess activities a week average?
    1. I’ve improved most since I started playing longer and more serious games in the 4545 league / lonewolf. Before that it was pretty much just blitz… I do some tactics here and there but no fixed schedule or anything like that

  1. What is the best advice you’ve been given so far concerning chess?
    1. Play better moves. Given to me by the great chess player Lukhas

  1. What is your lifelong goal in chess (i.e. are you trying to achieve a certain rating, or chess title)?
    1. 2000 classical would be neat. But next goal is 1900

  1. Do you have a specific game you’ve played in the Team league that was memorable to you? If so, why is it memorable?
    1. I have some good memories, but mostly bad memories of terrible games. But no single game that really stands out in my memory.

  1. In your opinion, who is the most underrated or underappreciated chess player?
    1. glbert. Word has it that he’s actually a GM

Lichess 45/45 league community questions…

  1. How long have you been part of the Lichess 45/45 league?
    1. Around 2 years now – since season 7

  1. Confess! How often do you watch League TV and/or streamers going over league games?
    1. I enjoy kibitzing, especially with other team members or enemy team members, or with players that I know

  1. Would you ever consider meeting other league community members if given the opportunity?
    1. You mean irl? Already happened. I met a few people from the league and nothing but nice guys, some of which I now meet occasionally to play OTB. Since around one year I’m organising a weekly chess get together here in Zurich which is great fun. It’s mainly blitz / bughouse and beer. If anyone’s ever around Zurich, I can highly recommend dropping by for a few games ( https://schachklub-k4.ch/)

  1. What is the best aspect of the 45/45 league to you, that keeps you returning every season?
    1. The chess, obviously, and I really like the community. I also really like the fact that the league is run in a similar spirit as lichess, without money being the main objective.
